When disastrous flooding hit the Solomon Islands, your donations not only enabled Oxfam to act swiftly to provide emergency assistance, but they are also continuing to help people rebuild their means of earning a living.
Emergency relief phase
In consultation with Solomon Islands government and other NGOs, Oxfam launched an immediate response to the floods, including assessing damage and providing technical expertise to evacuation centre management. Oxfam has tabled safety and protection issues of affected people to government, NGOs and UN agencies.
Water, sanitation and hygiene
In the aftermath of a disaster, particularly flooding, it’s crucial that we focus on preventing the spread of disease. Oxfam provided items for 927 hygiene kits distributed at evacuation centres. The hygiene kits included soap, water containers, toothbrushes and other items vital in preventing the spread of disease.
We also provided:
- 847 jerry cans
- 250 mosquito nets
- 900 buckets with taps
- 440 tarpaulins
Family kits
Oxfam distributed 625 family kits containing basic cooking equipment.
Long-term recovery phase
Vege gardens
Oxfam distributed 1333 livelihoods kits, reaching at least 6151 people. The kits each contained seeds, a garden spade, hoe, bush knife and sharpening file. Villages were also given large axes for communal use. In addition, 1128 people received seed packs containing bok choy, beans, eggplants, capsicum and pumpkin. These crops will help supplement and improve diets and the surplus can be sold at local markets.
Women’s groups
We are establishing women-led community savings groups so that money can available and accessible for people affected by future disasters.
Agricultural training
Oxfam will provide agricultural training to improvide productivity and sustainability.
Greenhouses
Our long-term strategy includes repairing and rebuilding community greenhouses.
Cocoa
We are replacing cocoa driers lost in the floods so that farmers can once again earn higher prices at the market by selling processed beans.
