The Highlands Region of Papua New Guinea has a new network of women fighting for human rights. Key women leaders from the seven Highlands provinces in Papua New Guinea, all of whom are fighting to defend human rights in their region, joined together in March 2011 to form The Highlands Women’s Human Rights Network (HWHRN). Together, the women are working to promote peace, economic, social and gender justice in the Highlands.

Eastern Highlands Family Voice (EHFV) has been working with those affected by family violence in the Highlands of Papua New Guinea for the last ten years. This report by EHFV and Oxfam looks at its case histories over the last three years, to help build a profile of who uses their services and why. The information will help identify what information and support is needed by clients, so that EHFV can improve and better target their counselling services.
Oxfam welcomes the strong commitment to regional cooperation in negotiating an international Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) made at the Pacific Islands Forum held in Auckland last week. Pacific governments should follow through on these commitments by actively working together to develop a common position ahead of the ATT negotiating conference next July.
