Oxfam is gearing up its aid efforts after the Philippines has been devastated by the worst typhoon ever recorded to have hit land. Huge areas of the Philippines have been destroyed and 10 million people need urgent assistance.

Typhoon Haiyan: Utter destruction, Oxfam appeals for funds
In the wake of super typhoon Haiyan, thousands are feared dead and over 4.4 million people affected across 36 provinces. An Oxfam team of aid experts assessing level of typhoon damage in Daanbantayan, the northern-most tip of Cebu mainland, said today that nearly all the houses and buildings were damaged, power lines were down and there was no electricity in the entire municipality.

Manila, Philippines – Oxfam has dispatched a team of experts on the ground to assess the water, public health and sanitation conditions in Bohol today and another batch of teams will go to Northern Cebu, Northern and Eastern Samar and Leyte, in the Eastern Visayas region in the Philippines, after super typhoon Haiyan (local name: Yolanda) hit the Philippines on 8 November.

A research report undertaken by Philippines research organisations and released by Oxfam New Zealand today, suggests that the treatment of workers on Dole’s Philippine banana plantations is anything but ethical. These are the plantations that supply bananas for the New Zealand market.
