One fifth of Honiara’s population in evacuation centres
Tens of thousands of people in and around Honiara have been left homeless by the recent flash flooding and heavy rains in Solomon Islands. Entire communities have been swept away, major access bridges have collapsed and roads have been destroyed with areas of the city isolated by the destruction.

Solomon Islands flooding — Oxfam assessing damage
Initial reports are that 16 people have died, thousands of people have been evacuated and hundreds of homes have been destroyed in flash flooding in the Solomon Islands’ capital of Honiara, where there has been extremely heavy rain over several days.

After a year of New Zealand’s role as Chair of the Pacific Islands Forum, the Cook Islands is about to pick up the baton for the next year. Pacific nations join forces to tackle international arms trade
Ending the deadly impact of the illicit trade in firearms and reducing the threat of armed conflict in the Pacific will be the focus of talks in Brisbane this week. Those attending the talks will also develop a regional position to take to negotiations at the United Nations in July for the world’s first truly global, legally binding Arms Trade Treaty (ATT). The treaty will seek to establish common international standards for the import, export and transfer of conventional arms.

Oxfam urges Pacific leaders to achieve a strong arms trade treaty
Oxfam welcomes the strong commitment to regional cooperation in negotiating an international Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) made at the Pacific Islands Forum held in Auckland last week. Pacific governments should follow through on these commitments by actively working together to develop a common position ahead of the ATT negotiating conference next July.
