Oxfam award-winning film on women not authorized for screening in India

An Oxfam award-winning film challenging the deep-rooted patriarchy in India cannot be screened in the country. The Central Board of Film Certification has refused to certify ‘Lipstick Under My Burkha’, saying the movie is “lady orientated” and contains “contentious sexual scenes, abusive words [and] audio pornography.”

The Indian Ocean Tsunami, 10 Years On

The 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami was a pivotal moment for the humanitarian sector; many lessons were learned and the humanitarian system was strengthened as a result. However, ten years on, significant challenges remain.

Using the case of the tsunami – a rare example of a well-funded humanitarian emergency – this report looks at key lessons from the response and examines why some emergencies receive rapid, generous funding while others remain virtually ignored by the international community.

As humanitarian need increases, it is imperative that the global community continue to work towards adequate, needs-based funding, and strives to reduce the costs and human impacts of future humanitarian emergencies.


Cyclone Phailin

Oxfam India will provide water, sanitation and shelter to initially 60,000 people affected by Cyclone Phailin. The storm, one of the country’s biggest natural disasters in years, left India on Sunday leaving almost 9 million people affected.

Oxfam’s water & sanitation efforts receive kudos

The first casualty after the tsunami disaster was drinking water. We ran helter-skelter to this school when the waters rushed in early in the morning,” recalls Daivani, sitting on a mat spread out on the grassy patch in the front yard of St Mary’s High School. The school now functions as a camp for villagers of Colachel in Kanyakumari district, Tamil Nadu.
