Oxfam has revealed this year’s most generous New Zealand towns in its latest Oxfam Unwrapped generosity list.
In its third year, the generosity index looks at the numbers and locations of gifts given through the Oxfam Unwrapped appeal, and has named ten towns as the most generous givers across the country.
The Tasman district has once again come out on top, with Upper Moutere named the most charitable town for the third year running. Upper Moutere ranked highest on the list for having donated the most gifts for its population size – around 165 people, according to Statistics New Zealand.
The number two and three spots went to Takaka, also in the Tasman district, and Russell in the Bay of Islands.
Areas with the top total gifting are Auckland, with over $950,000 donated over the last seven years, Wellington and Christchurch.
“Oxfam Unwrapped is a great way for New Zealanders to feel connected to the donations they give,” said Oxfam’s Marketing and Fundraising Manager Becky Calder. “Through Oxfam Unwrapped gifts, generous Kiwis have enabled impoverished communities to plant nutritional gardens, gain organic certification for crops, access clean water, better education and medical services, all through giving.”
Here’s how it works: choose a gift from Oxfam Unwrapped, order online, by phone or mail, receive one of our quirky gift cards to give to friends and loved ones, and your gift is passed on to communities in the developing world where it is needed most. Over the past eight years, Oxfam Unwrapped has raised over $4.3 million from generous Kiwis to help communities work their way out of poverty.
With brand new gifts, from a box of chocolates for the ethical chocolate lover in your life, to bathroom units providing clean water for drinking and sanitation in areas at risk of waterborne diseases, Oxfam Unwrapped has something for everyone. Every gift represents a real tool used by Oxfam staff to overcome the injustice of poverty, supporting people in the Pacific to work their way towards a better and brighter future.
With nearly 60 gifts to choose from, starting at just $10, these are the perfect stocking fillers, and won’t blow the budget.
Giving and receiving gifts has never been so easy, or so much fun. So, why not pass the parcel of a life-changing gift this Christmas – and make sure your town is in the running for next year’s generosity list!
