A landslide several hundred metres wide and one kilometre long struck the Highlands of Papua New Guinea yesterday around 7am. The location is near the town of Tari and initial reports indicate that upwards of 60 people have been buried. Oxfam is monitoring the situation closely.
Harry Gubala, Oxfam’s Disaster Management Officer in Papua New Guinea, is joining the rapid assessment team put together by the PNG National Disaster Centre.
Oxfam works extensively with communities across the Highlands, including carrying out long-term development work and research in the Hela province for the past five years. Two local partner organisations involved in Oxfam’s livelihoods programme, Hela Community Care and the Hela Rural Women’s Development Foundation, outreach to families in the area where the landslide occurred.
