DR Congo: Strengthen civilian protection before elections
The United Nations Security Council should ensure that the UN mission in Congo (MONUSCO) has adequate and appropriate resources to protect civilians from attacks by the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) and to avert election-related violence, a coalition of 47 international and Congolese organisations said today. The coalition said the UN mission, in its current form, is insufficiently prepared to respond to many challenges posed by ongoing violence from various groups, including in the eastern Kivu provinces, and upcoming presidential elections.

Developing countries pledge bigger climate emissions cuts than world’s richest nations
A new study for Oxfam reveals that developing countries are pledging to cut their emissions of greenhouse gases by more than developed countries. Oxfam estimates that over 60 per cent of emissions cuts by 2020 are likely to be made by developing countries.

International aid agency Oxfam is stepping up its cholera prevention work in the Carrefour neighbourhood of the capital city Port-au-Prince, to stop the spread of the latest cholera outbreak in the area.

Oxfam mourns the death of Philomen Gulland
In a tragic gas explosion in Onehunga on Saturday, Watercare worker Philomen Gulland died and co-worker Ian Winson was badly injured. Both Philomen and Ian were supporters of Oxfam through their participation in Oxfam Trailwalker. Philomen was the driving force behind Watercare’s partnership with Oxfam Trailwalker ever since the event came to New Zealand in 2006, and she personally took on the 100 kilometre challenge an amazing five times.
