A short campaign to highlight the secrecy of the Trans Pacific Partnership Agreement has resulted in 26,000 signatures on an e-petition or letters to political leaders, calling for release of the draft text under the catchcry “It’s not democracy, and it’s not right”.

Oxfam’s Jane Beesley met Romeo Rosello (61) at a distribution for hygiene and water kits at Mancilang Baranguy, Madridejos, Bantayan Island, Cebu. As a senior citizen he was fast tracked through the distribution with other senior citizens, women who were pregnant, and those with disabilities. Over 600 families received hygiene and water kits that day. Romeo and his wife Lourdes were revisited on 27 November when they provided feedback on how useful they found the kits.
Barry Coates, Oxfam’s New Zealand Executive Director since September 2003, has announced that he will leave the organisation in March 2014. Recruitment for his successor has been launched today.

There are an estimated one million refugees from Syria living in Lebanon, with more arriving every day. As the situation in Syria continues to deteriorate, it is increasingly likely that many will remain in Lebanon for many months, if not years, to come. The Beirut Research and Innovation Centre was commissioned by Oxfam to survey 260 households, representing 1,591 individuals, about their living conditions, sources of income and expenditure patterns, coping mechanisms and perceptions of life in Lebanon. The survey shows that many families are spiralling deeper into debt, living in cramped conditions, with few job prospects and dwindling hope for the future.
